GIJS VAN BON -
SANDWRITER
Gijs van Bon is an installation artist. He attended the Design Academy in Eindhoven and did an advanced training at the HKU.
Van Bon is not a typical designer, he creates installations, performances and therefore experiences. One of his projects is about the performance of writing and drawing with sand. Van Bon created multiple sandwriters to show this.

This project of Gijs van Bon is an inspiration for our project because it shows how a simple material such as sand can create an experience. It shows how to work together with man, weather and time to produce a ritual that is biodegradable. A personal touch can be added to it by participating or demolishing. All these aspects are aspects we also want to include in our concept.

Sandwriter SKRYF
This sandwriter has a small opening for the sand. It slowly creates text using this sand on the floor. While the machine is writing, it protects the letters. But when it is finished the text will get affected by the weather, wind and audience. Eventually it will disappear again.
Skryf can write big and small texts, inside and outdoors.
Skryf is referring to the fact that everything is transitory, so it will not last. It shows how normal sand can get meaning by shaping words and then can disappear again easily.
Sandwriter BLOM

Blom is a sandwriter which draws with sand. It creates some sort of drawing. To colour it in small buckets with coloured sand are placed close to the drawings so that everyone can colour them in. This gives a layer of participation to the project.
Just like the Skryf these sand drawings are also destroyed by man, nature or time.

Nightwriter Nyx

Nyx is the goddess of the night. The nightwriter writes with light-emitting poetry in darkness.
The component Nyx writes with is photoluminescent powder and special sand. The letters are illuminated with an ultraviolet light, to make them glow. Once in a while a person with a light bearing yoke re-energizes the letters.
Because of the mixture of the powder and the sand, the text stays longer. This text can be seen as a reader through the darkness.
