A SALTY PAUSE

Cacao powder
Coffee grounds
Coconut oil
Seasalt white fine
Seasalt pink big grain
Orange juice & peels

It looks nasty and feels very dry when scrubbing hands. Doesn't have a relaxing smell: it smells like coffee and cacao, and the orange is too weak to smell. But it does feel soft after and doesn't leave a bad smell.
Orange peel + juice
Lemon peel + juice
Coconut oil
Seasalt white fine

It looks very nice and smells super fresh & has an energetic sense to it. It leaves a bit of small peels but feels very soft after. It leaves a nice fresh smell also. But the scrub seems a bit too juicy.
SMALL amount
of orange + lemon juice
Coconut oil
Seasalt white fine
Seasalt pink big grain
Orange + lemon peel, dried before & powdered.

In comparison with the one before, it makes a huge different when the peels of lemon/oranges are dried first in the oven. Then they can be put in the blender to make small grains of it, then add it with the himalayan salt as well. Looks the most beautiful & makes it dryer instead of juicier.

I think the last one looks the best. Though I think the Himalayan big grains are a bit too big - they could be combined with the small grains too get a better result. The coffee one is too juice and the least attractive, I think. But it could be fine-tuned. Also, I found out that my hands were very dry after all these scrub-tests. So I think we really have to add a moisturiser / oil to it, maybe with some salty element as well.

LUSH is a brand which really centers service and sustainability.
We asked for their salt-scrubs and were surprised by the possibilities!
We were treated with different scrubs. It's smells were super nice but also aspect of having a short hand massage: this really adds value to the relaxation part, which we could maybe add to our installation to make it more social as well.

RITUALS.

We went to the shop RITUALS as well. There, it's clear that its more centered on luxury & consumerism, instead of sustainability (in comparison with LUSH) or a social aspect. It's just smart marketing. For example, the scrubs are all named after certain cultural events like Holi (India). But it has nothing to do with the holi event: it just looks very attractive. This made clear that we will be careful with relating branding to our concept, because it could void our intention, which is to make it a very social experiment. Relating it to branding gives the assumption that it's about consumerism instead of something we would like to give and share. It could make people fear that they have to buy something in there, which we should avoid to really center the experience of our concept.

PROCESS
Our process started of with making the group. We formed a group together because we were all interested in salt as a ritual.

After creating the group, we decided to do more research. During a brainstorm session we put all of the research together to come up with a general idea.
BRAINSTORM
After brainstorming, we decided we wanted to create a ritual with salt to help people relax and destress.

The world nowadays is really fast. Time is money. With our ritual we want to slow people down, give them a break and let them relax.

To create this pause we did more research into environment, sound, touch/feel etc. We experimented and did practical research.
The research can be found on the homepage!
After doing all the experiments and research, we put all the outcomes together and came up with the concept of creating a ritual pause by designing a scrub session.

These sessions need to balance out you feelings. It can be calming, destressing or boosting.

Every session has their own experience with a different scrub, sound and environment.
SALTY CERAMICS

EXPERIMENTS AT CERAMICS

We experimented in ceramics with making bowls of salt. As ingredients we used salt, corn maizena, water and clay. We experimented with making our own bowls of salt. We made two different versions, one with the salt sprinkled on top of it and one with the salt combined already with the clay. We also tried making a salty-scrub egg, which could be used as a more sustainable option to scrub your body.
Then, we tried to make our own clay by creating our own mixture of salt, corn maizena & water. (photos underneath) That was quite hard because it crumbled very easily and it spreaded out instead of being sticky and useable for making a bowl. In the end, it were nice experiments as a starting point for creating bowls / scrub eggs as a part of our salty package.

EXPERIMENTS 2

We made a bowl of salt, flour, coconut oil & water. And the scrub bowl ingredients were Himalayan salt, dried orange peels, oil, water and fine white seasalt as well. The scrub bowl was easy to made with the use of a mall and worked really well. But the bowl was hard to make, since, as soon as we finished the shape of it, it started falling apart. Maybe because of the weight/thickness/substance/technique. We then tried to use the heating blowdryer to harden it, which worked but quite slow.
